lag

  • noun A noticeable, regular delay in response to commands. There are two types: commands are echoed slowly (ie. it takes ages to get from your keyboard to the host and back to your screen) - this is caused by comms problems; commands are executed slowly (you types something, see it come up on your screen, but your command doesn't get acted on for some time) - this is caused by heavy host load. Lag can be continuous (happening all the time) or intermittent (after a brief period of lag it goes away for a while before returning), and can range in length from a split-second to minutes. If you are dumped because of triggering some time-out through lag, you are said to have been lagged off. See hang.
