2-level rule

  • noun Strictly speaking a guideline, the 2-level rule states that a persona should not attack another persona more than 2 levels below them without sufficient provocation. To disobey this is the act of a bully, and is punishable by the usual means.

The origins of this "rule" are obscure. It was proposed in Essex MUD as a temporary solution to the problem of high level players cutting a swathe through low level players for easy points, however it was widely abused and the wizzes felt that if they could reach the top without it, so could everyone else... It was resurrected for CompuNet MUD as a stop-gap response to its game management problems, and for BL as a pre-emptive measure against anticipated violence levels which CompuServe worried might spoil its wholesome, family image. Some of the CompuNet MUD players migrated to MUD2 when it arrived on the VAX, and from there it percolated through all subsequent incarnations of the game. It has never actually been formalised by the arch-wizzes, however.
