Honour is so well deserved

LIKE Mrs W Kenway (letters, June 11), I too was delighted to read of the award of Legion d'Honneur to Mr Eddie Slater.

I think it wonderful that this self-effacing man's long-standing and tireless dedication to his fellow members of the Normandy Veterans' Association has finally been recognised.

Praise is also due to the French, for having done their research.

It seems not to have entered the head of anyone in the British Government that some ex-service personnel deserve a medal as much for what they have done after the war was for what they did during it.

If the French can give Mr Slater their top gong, how come we in Britain can't even stretch to an OBE?
