Christmas storiesSir: I am disappointed that a vicar suggested Father Christmas could not deliver children's presents because of atmospheric friction ("Oh come off it, all ye faithful", 17 December; letter, 23 December). He spoke completely out of turn.As all Christmas historians know, the "Santa couldn't possibly travel that fast" story is traditionally reserved for odd-numbered years; for even-numbered years, we're meant to get the "Is this the real Star of Bethlehem?" story. Now scientists will have to think of something new to say next year.
